10 Minute Color Aftercare (From a Placentia Colorist): What to Do in the First 48 Hours
By Erica Ruiz hair | August 20, 2026
I love a quick color appointment that still looks natural and lived-in, especially for Grey Coverage on new growth. The single most important rule after your 10 Minute Color is simple: wait at least 48 hours before you wash. That pause gives the pigment time to settle so your root touch-up stays rich, even, and true. If you’ve got that mix of grey and dark hair you’d rather not show, this one step does more than most products ever will.
The first 24 to 48 hours: the rules that keep your color locked in
Your 10 Minute Color service is designed for speed and impact. In about 60 minutes, I apply permanent hair color to your new growth (up to 1 inch) to cover grays or darken lighter roots, then finish with a professional blow dry so you leave looking polished.
Right after that appointment, the goal is to keep things calm. Here’s what I recommend:
Do: Keep your scalp dry. If you need to rinse your bangs, do it carefully and avoid shampoo.
Don’t: Shampoo, use dry shampoo heavily, or scrub at your hairline. All of that can pull at fresh pigment early.
Skip for 48 to 72 hours: Heavy sweating, saunas, and hot yoga. Sweat and heat tend to fade new hair color faster, especially around the temples.
Avoid water activities: No pool or ocean for at least 48 to 72 hours. Chlorine and salt water are rough on fresh color.
If you’re leaving my chair in the Kraemer Boulevard commercial corridor in north Placentia and running errands after, keep it simple. Grab what you need, swing by Brea Mall if you want, but save the outdoor workout or long walk for tomorrow so you don’t sweat out that fresh tone.
Days 3 to 7: keep the shine, don’t accidentally strip your Grey Coverage
Once you hit the 48-hour mark, you can wash. But the first week is where I see people accidentally shorten the life of their color. A lot of my long-time clients love that their color looks natural, dimensional, and still gets compliments weeks later. That longevity is not luck. It’s routine.
Wash smart
Use cool to lukewarm water, especially on your hairline. Hot water opens the cuticle more and color molecules tend to rinse out faster. And don’t use clarifying or anti-residue shampoo for at least a week. Those are great products when you need a reset, but they’re not your friend right after permanent hair color.
Watch the Placentia sun and late-summer sweat
Placentia runs hot and dry in late summer. August through October is when I see color fade faster from sun exposure and outdoor plans. If you’re outside, pop on a hat or use a UV-protectant spray. If you do end up sweating, rinse with cool water after and let me know if your hairline starts looking warmer than you want.
Heat styling is fine, just don’t overdo it
Hold off on high heat tools for the first 48 hours. After that, use a heat protectant every time you blow-dry, curl, or straighten. If you’ve also got highlights, mini highlights, a mini balayage, or face frames, heat protection matters even more because lightened hair dries out faster.
Product picks that actually help a professional colorist’s work last
I’m not big on product overload. Two things usually make the biggest difference after a root touch-up or Grey Coverage service:
- Sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner. This helps you keep tone without that squeaky-clean feeling that can dull shine.
- A real heat protectant. If you’re blow-drying daily or using a curling iron, this is non-negotiable for long-term hair health.
- A UV protectant on outdoor days. It’s a small habit that pays off in Placentia when the sun is doing the most.
Quick note: If you’re also wearing hair extensions or you’ve been searching “brazilian blowout near me, ” tell me before you change products at home. Extensions and smoothing services have their own rules, and I’d rather keep you from buying something that makes your hair feel coated or dry.
These aftercare steps are the same for my clients coming in from Fullerton, Brea, Yorba Linda, Anaheim, and Orange. Quick color services still deserve the same smart routine as a bigger appointment.
If something feels “off, ” tell me early (it’s what I’m here for)
Most of the time, everything settles beautifully and you just enjoy the grow-out. People stick with me for years because I’m consistent and I don’t rush the details. One of my regulars put it best:
“She’s consistent, professional, and really listens to what you want. I never feel rushed with her she takes her time and makes sure everything comes out right.”

Reach out if you notice uneven tone at the hairline, stubborn gray peeking through sooner than expected, or your scalp feels unusually irritated. Sometimes it’s a simple fix, like adjusting how you’re shampooing around the temples. Sometimes we need to bring you back in. Either way, I’d rather you ask than try a box color “quick fix” at home.
Want your next appointment to stay easy? Keep a note of what you loved about this hair color, plus anything you want tweaked next time. When you’re ready, I’ll get you back in for another 10 Minute Color refresh (or we can talk haircut, highlights, or face frames if you’re itching for a change).

If you found me while searching for a freelance colorist or professional colorist, this is the kind of support I mean. Great hair color is what I do in the chair. Keeping it looking that way at home is the teamwork part.
