Gray highlights aftercare: first 48 hours & summer tips

By Erica Ruiz hair | July 23, 2026

If your natural color is a mix of grey and black and we just lifted you into an amazing blonde with a natural lived-in look, your #1 rule is simple: give your color 24 to 48 hours before you wash, sweat hard, or hit heat tools. That little pause helps the cuticle settle so your tone stays cleaner longer, especially in Placentia’s hot, dry summer weather.

Quick context: Our Grays + Highlights appointment runs about 150 minutes and starts at $265. We combine root color with delicate highlights for bright, blended dimension, and we finish with a blow dry so you leave seeing the real end result.

Your first 24 to 48 hours: the 6 things that protect tone fast

This window matters because fresh highlights and a fresh root color can look a little different once you start washing, sweating, and styling. We want you to keep that clean blend and brightness you left with.

Do this first: Wait at least 24 to 48 hours before shampooing. If you need a refresh, use a cool-air blow dry at the roots or a light dry shampoo, then brush through gently.

  • Skip heavy sweating (hard workouts, sauna, long hot walks). Sweat and heat can make fresh toner fade faster.
  • Avoid hot tools (flat iron, curling iron). If you absolutely have to style, keep it low heat and use a heat protectant.
  • Don’t “scrub” your scalp if you do rinse. Use lukewarm water, gentle fingertips, and keep it quick.
  • No clarifying shampoo right away. It’s great sometimes, just not in the first couple days after highlights.
  • Hands off the hairline. Try not to constantly tuck, twist, or pick at pieces. That friction can rough up the cuticle and dull shine.

If you’re commuting through the Kraemer Boulevard commercial corridor in north Placentia and you’re tempted to throw it in a tight bun right away, keep it looser. A soft clip, a low pony, or a gentle braid usually keeps the blend looking smoother.

The first week in Placentia: pools, sun, and the “why is it warmer?” moment

A lot of our Grays + Highlights guests choose this service because the blend grows out softly and stays natural looking. We want that to last. In July and August, the big tone-stealers are sun, hot water, and pool days.

Swimming after highlights: what we actually want you to do

If you can, avoid chlorinated pools and salt water for the first week. If you can’t, do the “barrier routine” before you get in: rinse hair with fresh water first, work a small amount of conditioner or leave-in through mids and ends, then put hair up. After you swim, rinse immediately with fresh water and shampoo as soon as you can with a color-safe shampoo.

Tone tip: Chlorine can pull hair warmer or even a little greenish on lighter pieces. The faster you rinse, the less your highlights grab onto it.

Sun and car commutes: your low-effort defense

Placentia sun plus a sunny drive can fade toner quicker than you’d think. Keep a leave-in UV and heat protectant near your keys and mist it on before you head out. If you’re running errands around north Placentia shopping centers, a hat helps too, especially if your highlights sit close to your part line.

And yes, if you notice the tone looking a touch warmer by day 5 to 7, that’s common. It doesn’t mean your color “failed.” It usually means your hair is porous or you’ve had more heat and sun than usual. We can bring it right back with the right toner timing.

Purple shampoo for gray highlights: the routine that keeps it clean, not dull

Purple shampoo is great for gray blends and brighter blondes, but timing and frequency matter. We generally recommend waiting until after that initial 48-hour window, then starting slow. Overdoing it can make hair look smoky, dull, or a little flat.

Start here: 1 time per week for most people. If you’re very light or you swim a lot, 2 times per week can work. Leave it on just long enough to neutralize warmth, then condition well.

If your hair feels dry: alternate with a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo. Highlights love moisture. Dry hair grabs heat and turns brassy faster.

Weekly deep conditioning helps a lot, especially if you wear your hair long. We care about hair health while we lighten, and your at-home routine is what keeps it feeling silky between visits.

Toner or gloss timing: the 6 to 10 week sweet spot for Grays + Highlights

If you love that bright, dimensional look, plan on a toner or gloss every 6 to 10 weeks. The exact timing depends on porosity, how light we went, and how much sun and pool time you’re getting in Placentia during summer.

  • Book closer to 6 weeks if your hair turns warm fast, you swim often, or you like a cooler, brighter finish.
  • Book closer to 8 to 10 weeks if you prefer a softer lived-in tone and your hair holds toner well.
  • Root timing is different. Root color depends on how quickly your gray grows in and how strong you want that coverage to be.

A lot of our regulars tell us they still get compliments even when the hair has grown out because the blending stays that good. That’s exactly why we take our time placing highlights. Your maintenance visits just keep the tone fresh and your ends healthy.

If something feels “off, ” reach out fast, we’ll talk it through

Most of the time, little changes are normal after your first wash. The hair can feel slightly drier for a couple days, your tone can read a touch warmer in different lighting, and your part line might look brighter once you style it yourself.

But if your scalp feels irritated, your hair is grabbing green after a pool day, or your gray coverage isn’t sitting the way you expected, let us know. We’d rather troubleshoot early than have you staring at your mirror getting frustrated.

“I never feel rushed with her she takes her time and makes sure everything comes out right.”

We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before your first shampoo. That gives the color and toner time to settle so your blend stays cleaner and brighter longer.

If you can, avoid pools and salt water for the first week. If you do swim, rinse with fresh water before getting in, add a light conditioner or leave-in as a barrier, then rinse immediately after and shampoo as soon as you can with a color-safe shampoo.

A hard, sweaty workout in the first 24 to 48 hours can fade toner faster, especially in summer heat. After that window, it’s usually fine, but keep dry shampoo and a cool-air blow dry in your routine so you’re not over-washing.

Most people do best with purple shampoo 1 time per week. If you’re very light or you swim a lot, 2 times per week can help. If your hair starts feeling dry or looks a little smoky, back off and rotate in a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo.

Plan on toner or gloss maintenance every 6 to 10 weeks, depending on how porous your hair is and how cool or bright you like your tone. Root touch-up timing depends on how quickly your gray grows in and how strong you want the coverage.
