I work with a lot of natural mixes of grey and black, and I hear the same thing all the time: you want that lived-in look, just without the grey shouting first. If you need a fast, same-day refresh in Placentia, 10 Minute Color is my go-to for quick root blending and tone boosts. If you need full Grey Coverage, a bigger shade change, or the longest wear, permanent hair color is usually the better choice.
Quick answer: choose 10 minute color when you want a fast root touch up and a polished blowout in one visit. Choose permanent hair color when you need stronger Grey Coverage or you want to change your overall shade and keep it for longer.
What I mean by “10 Minute Color” (and what permanent color really does)
My 10 Minute Color appointment is a 60-minute service starting at $130. I apply permanent color to your new growth, up to about 1 inch, to quickly cover greys or darken lighter roots. You also get a professional blow dry, so you leave looking finished, not half-done.
Permanent hair color, as a category, is broader. It can be an all-over color, deeper Grey Coverage, or a more noticeable shift in tone. It tends to hold up longer through washing and sun exposure, which is why it’s often the pick when you want fewer color appointments on the calendar.
I keep this comparison fair because both options have a place. I do hair color every day, plus haircut work that supports the color, like face frames, mini highlights, and mini balayage, when you want more brightness around the front without committing to a full highlight appointment.
The trade-offs that actually matter: wear time, grey coverage, and upkeep
If you’re deciding between a quick color touch-up and permanent hair color, these are the real decision points.
1) Speed and schedule flexibility

Permanent hair color makes more sense when you want a bigger change, you want longer wear, or you’re frustrated that grey is showing through too quickly. I’ll also nudge you toward permanent color if you’ve got more than about an inch of regrowth, since this specific service is built around new growth up to 1 inch.
